Shadow Theatre Company will present “The Final Mile to Providence” as the company’s 2011/12 season opener in place of “The Sisters, Sweetwater”, which is now set to open in February 2012 after returning to a workshop process. “The Final Mile to Providence” is a world premiere production by company member Arnold King.
The 3-part drama will take place at Su Teatro @ The Denver Civic Theater, 721 Santa Fe Dr. from October 20 until November 5. Each part will be presented in repertory on three nights throughout the run. The first part of “The Final Mile to Providence” will run Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Part 2 will run Fridays at 7:30 p.m. The third and final part, which completes a workshop process on September 23, will run Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. Saturday evenings will feature encore presentations of each respective part. Tickets are $20. On Sunday, October 30 at 6:30 p.m., there will be a full presentation of all three parts with two intermissions.
“The Final Mile to Providence” is the story of a family that has fallen apart after the death of its matriarch. Years later, two sisters find themselves inexorably drawn to the home of a family friend where they wage a war over custody of the elder sister’s unborn child. Things get more complicated as they are haunted by the menacing memory of their mother and an unexpected visitor. The play is part of a collaboration with an artistic initiative called the Source, a new, grass-roots project devoted to work-shopping new African-American works in Denver.
“Moving back to Denver and into the Santa Fe Arts District with our kindred spirits in Su Teatro has opened up some new doors that allow us to get real adventurous and creative,” said King. “It’s an exciting time!”

SHADOW THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

The Sisters, Sweetwater

How do we transcend the pain of horrendous circumstance? It’s 1928 and the heart-stung, yet joyful power of the blues tints this stark drama with pure life. It is the epic story of two sisters: Chelsea, the wild child and Oleta, the church girl; born in a bordello in Silverton, Colorado. Desperately, they seek to exact their future; to force happiness to be. Thus, it eludes them, haunts them, and tantalizes them in decisions rooted in alleviating pain. Sometimes we can lead life, but sometimes we must just follow.

Shadow Theatre Company is proud to announce a partnership with the artistic initiative known as “The Source” in the development of our season of original works. With this collaboration, Shadow has been given the opportunity to workshop its original productions, beginning with The Sisters, Sweetwater by Shadow Theatre Company Artistic Director Hugo Jon Sayles. These workshops give each play of our season the opportunity to grow and develop into two full productions; the first by Shadow, the second by The Source. The workshop for The Sisters, Sweetwater is already underway, and shall end with a special presentation on September 2. The Shadow Theatre Company production of The Sisters, Sweetwater will now open on October 20 and run through November 5. The Source’s production shall follow afterward.
